Medical Massage for Injury Rehabilitation

Are you suffering in pain resulting from an injury?

Medical Massage can be used to treat two different kinds of injuries.

An injury can be from an impact or repetitive use.

Maybe your back hurts all the time. Maybe your low back hurts when sitting or bending.

Maybe it’s something with your shoulder or neck. Maybe you have been in a car accident.

Injury rehabilitation may be just the thing you need.

Massage helps your body recover properly.

For new injuries, massage immediately helps the connective tissue heal, so it remains strong and healthy.

In old injuries, connective tissue has built up and stuck together, creating a pattern of inflexibility and weakness.

If an injury is left unattended, it may never break free of the pain cycle or tension. Even if it heals enough to stop hurting, after months or years the tissues may not be fully recovered.

With Medical Rehabilitation massage, that connective tissue is broken down and lengthened to rebuild and move freely. This relieves pain and increases range of motion.

Besides the pain itself, we address what is causing the pain.

When we use massage for injury rehabilitation, we work specifically with the areas that need attention.

It’s very different than a full body relaxing massage, though we do make it a relaxing experience for you.

We often test the area we’re working with before and after the session to gauge your pain levels and range of motion. Based on what we find during the massage, we’ll give you recommendations for stretches or exercises.

Impact injuries resulting from accidents.

Were you in a car accident? Bike accident? Did you get hurt at the gym? Did you slip on some ice or out hiking?

These are all impact injuries.

Something obvious happened, and you know it was the cause of your pain.

A story of Adinah’s impact injury.

I was rear-ended; and although they were only going 35 MPH and I was stopped, I felt my neck and low back seize up. I also was very rattled and upset.

I went home and took an Epsom salt bath to help me and my body calm down and then went to bed. The next day I was alright, but a week later I was very sore.

I had a hard time turning my head. It hurt to sit down for too long or to stand for too long. In the morning, I’d wake up real sore and needed to take extra time to slowly get my body moving.

The pain was distracting me from my work, and I couldn’t work out like I normally did.

I went in to get a massage from my therapist; and they had to use very light pressure, because my body was in so much pain. They were very gentle and listened to me and my body, and I felt much better after the session.

They recommended I come back in a few days and do weekly sessions after that for a couple months or until my body wasn’t hurting so much.

I did that and noticed that each time I got a massage, I felt less and less pain – and they could use more and more pressure.

After about four months, I felt just fine most of the time and just needed maintenance work.

Sneaky Injuries result from repetitive strain.

Do you have a pain that seemed to come out of nowhere? There seemed to be no reason it started hurting?

You were sweeping the floor, and your lower back “went out.” You lifted something “wrong,” you turned your head the “wrong way,” or you “slept wrong.”

These are repetitive strain injuries. They just snuck up on you over time (the jerks!).

Either way, you hurt; maybe a little, maybe a lot!

The injured part of your body is basically mad at you and at the world; when you get a massage, we help the poor thing calm down so that it can heal faster and better.

The story of a client with a sneaky injury…

One of my clients came in because he had “thrown out” his back while working and was held up for a week at home.

It hurt him to sit or stand for more than half an hour at a time. He could not bend over and had to have help getting clothes on and off. The most comfortable position he found was lying flat on the floor.

This went on for almost a week before he was out of pain enough to leave his house and come in for a massage.

After his first session, he was about 5% better, so he came back a few days later. He felt 15% better after that one, so we did weekly treatments for a few weeks, and each time he made more and more progress until he was completely out of pain.

After that we did maintenance massage monthly, and he did exercises and stretching at home. Seven years later and he hasn’t had another episode of having his back “go out,” because he kept up on maintaining his body with preventative maintenance.

Our clients say it better than we can.

“Adinah has an amazing talent for being intense and gentle at the same time. She did so well with my body I began referring my personal training clients to her. Since then I have been able to see first hand the therapeutic effects that her methods have in terms of enhanced range of motion, strength and pain reduction. I am normally not comfortable with receiving a lot of bodywork, but I am glad that I made myself try a new type of self care. Well worth it!”

“I went to Adinah at Lifelong Wellness Center for treatment of my shoulders, both of which underwent recent arthroscopic surgery to repair SLAP lesions. I had tried both acupuncture and chiropractic services but met with mixed results. I still suffered from pain in my shoulders when typing and in recreational activities such as rock climbing. The therapy that Adinah provided went hand-in-hand with my rehabilitation regimen to offer remarkable results in about two months time. My pain receded gradually and I became increasingly capable of returning to my former quality of life. In the sessions themselves Adinah took care to focus on my specific trouble spots and provided calm instructions for focusing on and dealing with the pain and tensions in my body. This sort of process was new to me, but I soon learned that part of restoring prior function is in learning to relax mentally as well as physically. Thanks Adinah for the wonderful support and treatment!”
